In 1878 a sawmill was erected here as the first industry in the Norway - Vulcan area. John O'Callaghan was owner of this mill which supplied early mining number needs until 1902. This spring was caused by a 1094 foot hole which was drilled in 1903 by the Oliver Mining Company in search of iron ore. The hole cuts several steeply dipping porous strata that trap water at the higher elevations to the north. The difference in elevation causes pressure: this pressure is released by the drilled hole demonstrating the principle of the artesian well. On the slope to the north are the obscure workings of the Few and Munro mines, operated in 1903-1922, now owned by the Ford Motor Company. This roadside stop now offers free water to all. Fresh, clean and cold, this is a great spot to stop on fill your water bottles and stretch your legs. There is a small picnic area as well. It is located just on the west city limits of Norway, right on US-2.

During World War II, the Ford Motor Co., in Kingsford, built more of the engineless gliders than any other company. The World War II Glider and Military Museum features the 8th totally restored CG 4A Glider in the World!! This impressive museum holds unique collections of military uniforms from the Civil War through Iraq-Afghanistan. Other memorabilia includes fantastic displays of WWII photographs, German artifacts, 1930’s rare Model AA Ford Dump Truck, Model A Ford Tudor and the “Heiserman”, ¾ size Piper Cub replica used extensively in WWII, exciting WWII footage and personal stories of glider riders, Wall of Military and General Plaques honoring those who served along with the names of donors and more. Restoration of the glider, and the idea for a Glider Museum , began when the Historical Foundation received a deteriorated fuselage frame. The glider was originally owned by Olaf and Beatrice Blomquist of Iron Mountain who purchased it for $75 sometime after the war ended from the Ford Plant in Kingsford when surplus gliders were offered for sale. The Blomquist’s, in turn, sold it to their nephew, Vernon (Janie) Anderson of Metropolitan where it was used as a play house and hunting camp. The prized artifact was much later donated in 2005 by the Anderson ’s to the Historical Foundation. Interest generated enough funds to make the restoration possible and a suitable museum was then built to house the plane. The WWII Glider and Military Museum opened in July, 2011. Open Monday - Saturday 9 am - 5 pm. Sunday 12-4. Call ahead for more information and pricing.
